Freemium: Combining Free and Paid Services

Freemium is a business model where you give at least part of the produce or service away for free and make your money from users paying for additional features or upgrades.

While it is a common way of monetizing apps, the freemium business model is broadly applicable in settings where 1) the marginal costs of serving users is low (i.e., little direct cost from each ‘free’ users), 2) a certain number of free users are likely to upgrade to paid offerings, and 3) there are benefits of having a large user base (even if they are not paying)
